Skipping Past the Amateur Mistakes… It Can Be Done!

Colin Y.J. Chung | REALITYcopywriting.com Colin here, writing from Downtown, Seattle…

This vacation marks Cedrik’s first foray into America and abroad… and he’s going nuts. I chased him through all of Nordstrom this afternoon.

I also attended my first call of Shaune Clarke’s “Copywriting Client Marketing System” the Saturday prior. Shaune’s protégé, Terri Dumont reworked the course to a whole new level. She’s the one teaching the program, actually.

We are in good hands.

(Terri Dumont, if you haven’t heard, landed an ex-Gary Halbert client after zipping through Shaune’s coaching class two and a half years ago.)

But first, I need to thank John for convincing me to enroll. I wanted to just “dive into it” after burning through the AWAI copywriting course… and I’m sure I would’ve stumbled through on trial and error. After this first call, however, I  “see” what John was saying about accelerating through the amateur phase.

The biggest reason why relies on a unique teaching technique Shaune uses called “compare and contrast.” Basically, members in a group bounce ideas and critiques off each other with the coach preventing a “blind leading the blind” disaster.

As an example…

Someone coined himself a “marketing mechanic” on a self-promotion exercise.

Terri then asked the group, “How did that land?” Meaning… how we felt about it.

It gets interesting here.

The ladies in the group immediately thought of a car mechanic… while the men did not. To the female audience, it felt “targeted.” The word “mechanic” would perhaps “turn off” a certain segment. We guys simply didn’t see that at all.

“Compare and contrast” refracts opinions into a variety of voices, revealing aspects you would have never saw by yourself. Whether or not you enroll in a copywriting coaching course or not, I highly recommend getting together with fellow copywriters to do group critiques.

P.S. Not sure if Terri’s going to teach ALL the Copywriting Client Marketing System courses from now on… but I encourage you to check it out. You might recognize someone at this web page…

One way to do group critiques is to form a mastermind group of copywriters.

About 3 weeks ago, I completed Ryan Healy and John Angel’s 8-week coaching program. During the program, 5 of us (students) formed a mastermind group that “meets” (confrence) every Saturday, even though the coaching program is over.

We’ve done a critique session before, and what’s good is that a mastermind group can be more than that. We bounce marketing and client-getting ideas off of each other and talk about different ways of doing things.

Another great thing about a mastermind group is that it’s a place you can go to to feel understood. As a business owner, I share that feeling of not being understood by friends and family. They wonder why I’m spending so much time on this “thing”.

In our mastermind group, we all understand what we’re going through. It’s like hanging out with fellow comrades who are all in this together. We come together for a recharge before going back out into the world.
