“Pay Your Rent You No Good Copywriter!”
Even when the economic situation wins a gold star, there are always freelance copywriters saying “there’s no real income in this business - business owners ain’t interested.”
No wonder…
- Copywriter starts self-promo campaign for his services (e.g. sending direct mail to qualified businesses).
- Little or no response. Copywriter whimpers. No one loves him.
- Suddenly lands a few “okay” copywriting clients and maybe one good one.
- Stops campaign.
- Writes copy for clients.
- Needs more.
- Starts campaign again (wasting time figuring out how to get it running again - usually doing all the work themselves).
- Little or no response.
- Landlord banging on the door - “Pay your rent you no good copywriter!”
- Campaign kicks in… Copywriter lands few “okay” copywriting clients and maybe one good one.
- Copywriter stops campaign.
- Writes copy for clients. Needs more.
- Landlord’s back.
- Starts campaign again…
If such struggling copywriters would just keep their self-promotion pump (if they have one) going NON-STOP then they’d never run into those bad times.
If you aren’t turning prospects away, then you aren’t promoting yourself enough.
And please, don’t RELY on referrals!
Once you possess a SYSTEM, that pays for itself and a trained $10/hour monkey to turn the crank - you have an asset that will produce you hundreds of thousands of rapidly deflating green dollar bills.
It’s not about landing some copywriting clients. That’s easy! It’s about making the process perpetual and relatively hands-free so that your “cup always runneth over.”
P.S. Check out Shaune Clarke’s Copywriting Client Marketing SYSTEM. Not only does he give you the how-to information, the templates but he spends SIX weeks - working harder than I would - to make sure you know how to make it work…

“If you aren’t turning prospects away, then you aren’t promoting yourself enough.”
That point struck me, John, and reconfirmed that even though I’m on the right track, I’m not there yet.
Gotta get back to promoting myself…

Not just for the copywriting industry also… I’ll have to agree with the first comment.
That point really struck me also… I believe we are all guilty at some stage about becoming complacent in good times with our self promotion.
Build a system & then keep it working… Having just re-started our sending campaigns, we now have an in office person that does it everyday…. regardless of how I am feeling that day.
As you say, I’d rather be knocking them back then hunting them…
At least you have a list you can contact later when you need more.
