Is Colin Making False Claims About His Copywriting?

Before I jump into today’s controversial Reality Copywriting e-column, here’s a pic from our Canadian Thanksgiving…

On the train, returning from visiting relatives, a student with a textbook titled MARKETING, sat across from us. I noticed logos plastered all over the cover. ‘Oh, oh… She’s one of them,” I thought. You know… those marketing consultants who “sell” via image advertising.

Which brings me to Reality Copywriting reader Abi Holgate’s reply to Colin’s e-column from last week (on positioning yourself as a marketing consultant instead of copywriter…

Abi: “…you don’t want to be seen to be making false claims. To be a professional marketing consultant involves working at a high level within an organisation…”

Me: I do agree you need to know your stuff. That said… Colin’s e-column needs to be taken into context: The smaller the business the more they need an all-in-one marketing consultant-copywriter. While, large direct-response companies just need a copywriter.

Abi: “…’consultant’ requires so much more than just a name change - at the very least a professional marketing qualification and experience across different industries.”

Me: Well, if by “professional marketing qualifications” you mean a degree - direct response companies wouldn’t put too much faith in that.

Also, I find most businesses prefer the fact that I do not have experience across different industries, but instead focus on their industry (natural health).

In the end, if your range of experience doesn’t extend farther than stringing 26 letters together - start slowly…

P.S. Election Day in Canada (again!). I find myself (again!) only voting to help prevent the WORST party from winning a majority. Alas, I wish Ron Paul would run for Prime Minister!

    No he’s not.

    Dan Kennedy says it best: Nobody has to pay dues or climb ladders.

    If you can do the task, then you are allowed to charge good money for it.

    Don’t worry John — the Lieberals can’t possibly get a majority. Not even Canadians are that stupid.

    And there’s no way the New Dreamers will form a government. So relax and vote for the only party with a partial clue — the Conartists.

    And even if Ron Paul ran for PM, the Lieberals own ALL the major media. They’d destroy him the same way the Demoblican US press did.
