“Invective and Righteous Indignation”
Danny Evans, from Pittsburgh, wrote…
“You’re likely to get a fair amount of invective and righteous indignation from a portion of your e-mail list for having the ‘temerity’ to promote your political views.”
He’s referring to the email I wrote last week encouraging readers to check out U.S. presidential candidate Ron Paul. If you missed the email, Ryan Healy posted it on his copywriting blog.
I thought it would generate a fair bit of hate mail and many unsubscribes. Instead I received more positive emails than I was able to read and respond. If I wasn’t able to respond to yours, I want you to know it was appreciated. I’m switching to an online blog setup, so people can post their comments online and I can respond to them in “bulk.”
In the end TWO people (only 2!) unsubscribed. I received zero negatives pieces of mail, and one neutral piece.
I’m including excerpts from some of the mail below.
It doesn’t surprise me that so many copywriters support the free market, limited government society that Ron Paul is promising. As entrepreneurs we get “paid” exactly what our efforts denote. We understand the true struggle, risk and sweat involved in capitalistic ventures.
Everybody deserves the OPPORTUNITY to earn good money to pay for things they need and want. But, simply because you are a human being, doesn’t mean you should have things handed to you by others.
The only exceptions would be where people are physically disabled or in countries that do not provide the opportunities we enjoy in industrialized countries. (And even in those cases, it would better to try to give people the opportunity instead of just giving them the results, unearned).
Anyways, Dr. Ron Paul is gaining more and more attention from the media. He’s made it on the front cover of the New York Times after his supporters raised $4 million in campaign donations in ONE DAY via the internet.
Here’s a short interview with him, that I’d recommend you check out…
And here are some of the comments people sent me last week… If you’d like to leave a comment, please use the comment box at the end this post.“Corruption and Greed are Alive and Doing Well on Capitol Hill”I just read your email on Ron Paul. I first ran across this Texas congressman in the pages of World News Daily. He is the only candidate that gives more than hot air and empty promises. We have let things get so far out of hand that it takes severe measures to restore the economy. We need to vote for like minded members of Congress to push his legislation through. Corruption and greed are alive and doing well on Capitol Hill.

“I couldn’t agree more.”
“There is talk now of how the US Government can bail out the lending institutions and borrowers as a result of the current mortgage “crisis” (is it really a crisis?).
“And here in Minnesota, our legislature has been discussing what monetary compensation we should provide the victims of the bridge collapse. Where will it end?
“Don’t people have insurance that is intended to take care of them in the face of disaster?
“Are we supposed to reward everyone who is in a traffic accident that isn’t their fault, are we supposed to bail out any industry that makes errors in judgement and are we supposed to help with taxpayer monies those who borrow what they cannot pay back?
“You are correct, we need some drastic changes toward reducing government involvement in our personal lives. It is scary!
“Keep up the good work.
- Al Pedersen
I Am Truly Astounded
“I am truly astounded that you have bravely expressed yourself and your political beliefs.
“I applaud you for taking the risk. I too believe that we here in the states are in extreme peril. I’m afraid for my kids. If this country can not and will not revert back to our traditional” family and conservative values, the worst is yet to come. Although I don’t totally agree with you on your global/political assessment of our countys’ positioning in the world or onthe war on terror, we have more in common than otherwise.”

Sound Thinking
“It’s amazing how dumbed down so many Canadians and Americans have gotten the past few years. Congressman Paul is a breath of fresh air for folks like us who appreciate sound thinking.”
–Brian Ochsner

Ron Paul Rocks!
“Seriously, I can’t believe the CIA/FBI - other members of congress haven’t “iced him” yet. - lol
“I’ve been helping spread the word down here in the USA and it’s great to see a fellow Canadian understand how great he is.
“Thanks for spreading the word and introducing a whole group of people who probably haven’t given him a seconds worth of thought because they’re stuck in the lies and deception that all the other politicians spread - not to mention the dumb press and their agenda of trying to get Hillary elected.
“If even one person checks out Ron Paul and what he ACTUALLY stands for… well the email you sent today John will have been worth it.
“And don’t worry too much about “losing” any readers - if anything, as Dan Kennedy teaches, you just cemented your relationship with the BEST people on your list.
“Have a great week.”

“You’re a brave man.”
“I like Ron Paul too. I’m not so sure just what he could accomplish if elected but if we end up with any of the other candidates we’re in even more trouble than we’re in now.
“In the US, where I live, inflation is only kept under control by massaging the numbers. The real rate of inflation is much higher than the government numbers show. People just haven’t woken up yet to the fact they are likely to be flat broke by the time they retire and will likely need to keep working just to eat and stay warm in the winter. The government can’t fund the things they say they will and it will only get worse through the years.
“Thanks for bringing this up. You’re a good guy and I wish you continued success.”
— Perry

If there was ever a political candidate that expresses my political beliefs, it would be Ron Paul. He is, indeed, a breath of fresh air in the stagnant and putrid rhetoric that prevails in the American presidential campaigns today. When he says that we need sound fiscal policy, the gold standard, government accountability, reigning in of government expenditures, stopping the foreign dole, and limiting government in our lives to give us a true free enterprise, I could not agree more.

Ron Paul is the only Republican in the race, and the only Republican that has a chance of beating the democrats. If the GOP chose to support Paul, they’d get the Republicans, Independents, and Democratic cross over. Why can’t they see this?
Support Paul today!
Thanks John! You’re spreading the word, and don’t even live in our mess.
The rest of the GOP crowd is a sorry bunch that can’t even debate intelligently amongst themselves. All they do is bicker and change stances to appeal to people. They’re headed to the chopping block when it comes time to debate with the Democrats.

Thanks, Pual and John for your intelligent posts.
Even though I don’t live in the States, my reasons for supporting Ron Paul are tainted with self-interest:
1. Canada would hopefully follow the States examples if Ron Paul’s policies are put into place.
2. I’m considering moving back to California.
3. I write for the altnernative health market and the FDA only gets in the way of helping people better their health through alternative products and services.
4. The United States Army can declare martial law on Canada in case of an attack. The only problem is that I’m not sure I agree with what the current US administration might call “an attack.” I really don’t want US tanks ploughing our snow, unless we really, really need them.

Well I could say the same. I don’t want to live in poverty after our dollar and economy tanks from over borrowing & reckless spending.
