Do You Think You’re Being Paid to Write?

John C. A. Manley | September 29, 2008

John C. A. Manley | REALITYcopywriting.com Hope you had a good weekend…

I love watching the bonus DVDs that come with movies and TV series. They normally contain a “behind the scenes” with the writers.

On the LOST season 3 bonus DVD there’s a segment with J. J. Abrams and his crew hacking away at plot lines for the upcoming episodes.

They had this whole scene mapped out where “the Others” throw Sawyer into a cage with another man whom loyal viewers would recognize as the con-artist psychic (who sent young Claire to Los Angeles to sell her baby).

That scene never made it into the final production.

Mapping the plot out… before they waste time filming parts destined for the “editing room floor” (as Shaune likes to put it).

Mapping the selling process out… before your write copy that’s going in the completely wrong direction.

Are you doing the same with your copywriting projects? Do you research than blunder into writing… Or do you figure out what you’re going to write about first - before you actually put fingers to keyboard?

Try it. It changed my whole mindset. I realized clients aren’t paying me to sit down and “write.” Writing? Bad term, in my opinion. Better term: Transcribing my thoughts.

We make money by thinking and strategizing!

John, now you’ve got me wanting to go watch the old Lost DVD’s to see that con-artist psychic again.

I do agree with you…and I regret the times when there is no time for strategy thinking to get the writing better.

For my own projects, I’ve learned to schedule whole days just for quiet time to think.

Usually, when I decide to stop and take the time, it seems a waste, my to-do list tugs at me. And yet when I finish me day of “thinking” time, I realize I get so much more “done” than when I don’t take the time to think.

    Great thoughts as always.

Hey John, great article as always,I agree with you on strategic writing.

I learned this from sell more without hype MP3,and it was quite apparent that when using indirect persuasion that you need to be strategic, and plan your writing.

    Thanks John
