Copywriting Techniques Versus Your Gut Feeling
In response to my video on the use of exclamation points in direct-response copy, Lee Honts commented…
“My view on exclamation points is simple: I understand who I’m writing to - after [that] I just FEEL it.”
Lee’s a student of copywriting coach Shaune Clarke. In his coaching program Shaune strongly encourages copywriters to learn to follow their gut feeling.
Truly, there exists simply too many techniques, rules and secrets in copywriting that must dance with your particular prospects’ emotional, intellectual and philosophical complexities.
It’s really too much to intellectualize.
The problem, however, with relying on feeling exclusively: It works great for identifying if something feels right or wrong. But until you develop your gut reaction to a master level, feeling doesn’t always hand you the “right” piece to puzzle so readily.
That’s when you need to pull out your intellectual toolkit of copywriting techniques.
That’s when you need to analyze the problem employing rules and guidelines.
Otherwise, you end up haphazardly trying to find the right wording, the right approach or that mysterious “something” that will feel right. If you don’t need to sleep, that’s fine. Otherwise, indexing copywriting guidelines in your left brain makes life much easier.
Of course, the more you practice, the more all the techniques and tools becomes embedded in your subconscious - the magical part of our minds where logic and feeling work together at superhuman speeds.
P.S. Lee also wrote, “Great video! Loved the fact that it wasn’t done on a professional level. It was down-to-earth. I resonate with that as it makes you appear more human.” Thanks, Lee! If you missed the flick, click this link now…
